The Daily Grind

The Philistines took him, and put out his eyes…and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. (Jud. 16:21) Samson was banished to the daily “grind” of prison. He literally walked in circles. But, with each turn of the grinder wheel, his strength returned. Your trials have you walking in circles. Progress can be slow, but under the Master’s artful eye, each turn of the wheel reveals yet another facet of His Love. And, you never want that to come to a “grinding” halt!

Unfair Trade

My thoughts become cluttered. Heaven’s windows seem shuttered. Some days I struggle to breathe.
Stress closes in, my patience wears thin, and the fog so thick I can’t see.
But all hope is not lost, when I consider the cost Christ paid to set my soul free.
My rags for a robe, and riches untold, my sins buried deep in the sea.
How could I despair, this trade is not fair, when it was I who belonged on that tree?
The guilt was all mine, but His Glory Divine, paid the full ransom for me!

Strange Things

“We’ve seen strange things.” (Luke 5:26) Just how strange was it that a bedridden man was made whole; physically from palsy, and spiritually from sin? What seems even more strange, is when the “Lord is present to heal,” we stand idly by, and allow our affliction; physical, spiritual, emotional or otherwise, to paralyze our faith in Christ. It’s high-time, to lift the “roof” off our thinking, and raise the expectations of what other seemingly “strange” things God CAN and WILL do in our lives!

Simple Obedience at the River Jordan

The leprous Naaman was commanded by Elisha to dip in the River Jordan 7 times to be healed. There were no special properties in the river that cured Naaman, it was simple obedience! 850 years later, John baptized Jesus in that same River Jordan. Again, no special properties to wash away sins in the water, it was simple obedience! Praise the Lord, the blood of Jesus forgives sin through baptism in His Name, when we simply obey!

Humble Beginnings

Moses started out a basket case. David was a sheepish boy. Solomon was a sleeper. And, Jonah was fish bait. Moses went on to lead Israel to the Promised Land. David was “giant-killing” man after God’s own heart. Solomon was the wisest man of his day. Jonah preached a revival message that saved a nation. Don’t underestimate God’s resourcefulness in your life. He even used a vocal donkey to save a prophet’s life!

Blinded and Buzz Cut

Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven. [Jud. 16:22] Blinded and buzz-cut, Samson’s hair grew back as did his strength, allowing him greater power in the end. What spiritual source of strength, i.e. prayer, Bible study, or coming to church, have you cut off that’s blinded you to God’s vision for you? Learn from Samson; don’t let past failures derail you from regaining your strength.

What's a "Serminute?"

What’s a “Serminute?”

A one minute spiritual pick-me-up for busy Christians!

When I first started preaching I was tasked with the challenge of preaching not sermons, but “sermonettes.” I’m not certain who coined this word, but my understanding of it means a “bite-sized” sermon that doesn’t take a lot of time getting your point across. I’m definitely not a man of few words. Words are my paint, and paper my palette. So, trying to narrow my words yet get something meaningful across has proven to be quite an undertaking. You know the world we’re living in is face-paced and if you can’t get your fastfood meal in under a minute, you’re tapping your foot. I am aware of that so I’ve devised a plan for you to get a small devotion with a big meaning!

The idea isn’t new and has been embraced by several of my Facebook Friends as “sermonettes.” Of course, you’re only allowed 420 characters. I’ve allowed myself 500 characters and dubbed my little snippets “ser-minutes” as a play on the word sermonette or a “sermon in a minute.” It takes me a decent amount of time some days to write these, but it will only take you about a minute to read and hopefully be blessed and encouraged.

Now, for the next little while welcome to the 500 character sermonette I like to call “Ser-minute.” Enjoy the one minute spiritual pick-me-up for busy Christians!   – Rodger

Reigning the Rain

“For he [God] makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” [Matt. 5:45] Often we see rain as negative. In reality, without rain, entire nations starve for lack of harvest. Rainy days aren’t a curse, rather a blessing of God to sustain life. A life devoid of rain means an arid desert yielding no crops for harvest. The ONE, who reigns, reins the rain!

A Feat for Beautiful Feet

Our feet and ankles are strong complex mechanical structures. Home to more than 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments, they endure daily abuse and are considered by many a “feat” to keep clean and smelling good. Next time you’re clipping your toenails, remember God’s Word tells us, “Beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
